Cubana Reflects on Customs of New Arrivals to the USA: "It's a Task We Must Tackle"

Wednesday, September 18, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

A Cuban woman residing in Florida shared a reflection on TikTok based on an experience with a newcomer to the United States. In her video, Carelis Conde (@carelisconde) recounts how a recently arrived relative showed up at her door unannounced, calling her to open the door. However, she was not at home and tactfully explained that in the United States, it is customary to notify before visiting, asking if it is a good time. Despite her explanation, the relative got upset and hung up the phone.

"This is one of the many tasks we have pending as immigrants: respecting schedules. Considering and not imposing on others' time, and understanding that you are not always welcome, regardless of whether you are family or not," the Cuban woman commented.

Embracing New Customs

"Perhaps today you are the one who arrives unannounced, but tomorrow you will be the one who, like me, receives an unexpected visit," she reflected, emphasizing that time and experience teach lessons that cannot always be expressed in words.

"For all of us who emigrate, we must learn that what we leave behind is not just family and friends, but also customs. Has this happened to you?" concluded this Cuban in her video, sparking various opinions in the comment section. Some shared that they refuse to abandon this custom, while others agreed with Carelis's perspective.

"Now they think they are American and still don't have papers, the Cuban has lost the warmth, the joy, the hug of family or a friend... I don't care if they notify me, those are complementary things," "It's like that, and we Cubans have that bad habit," "I've lived here for 54 years, it has never bothered me that a family member or friend knocks on my door without notifying first. Of course, most of the time we call each other because we live far away," "I don't do it; it doesn't bother me if anyone arrives unannounced, but I respect those who adhere to that custom here. I try not to lose the spontaneous Cuban spirit. Sometimes we distance ourselves too much," "You are very right, and the worst part is that they think they are right, that those of us who have learned that time is gold and are not always available are cold and materialistic," or "That is correct, but many do not understand," are some of the messages read alongside the video.
