First Set of Triplets Born in Villa Clara in 2024 Discharged from Hospital

After spending over a month and a half in the hospital, the first triplets born in Villa Clara this year were discharged on Wednesday upon reaching the required weight. José Antonio, José Miguel, and Alicia, who were born on August 2nd, along with their parents Aracelys Fleites León and Yosami Álvarez Mora, and the rest of the family, now embark on the exciting journey of returning home and building their life together.

According to the state-run newspaper Vanguardia, this was the best birthday gift Aracelys could receive, as she celebrated her birthday that very day. In their home in Calabazar de Sagua, located in the Encrucijada municipality, a new chapter begins for this couple who, after 15 years of longing, finally experience the joy of parenthood.

Fleites spent more than four months in the hospital, from her admission as a patient until the birth of her children. "After the birth, the little ones spent ten days in the Neonatology unit, then were moved to the Skin-to-Skin ward, and today we finally return home, to Calabazar," the mother recounted emotionally.

Since then, she explains, not much has changed: "José Antonio still has the leading voice, being the firstborn, the loudest, the most restless, and the one who gains weight the fastest. Meanwhile, José Miguel, even in the womb, was very calm. He drinks his milk and adapts to any situation. Alicia, on the other hand, is a mix; she can be very passive or show her fiery side. But come three in the morning, she’s like a clock, and it's tough to get her back to sleep. After that, she returns to being calm," Fleites noted.

However, despite the current happiness, the path to giving birth was quite rough. After trying all available infertility treatments without success, they completed the legal and consent procedures in the country to undergo in vitro fertilization abroad.

The preparations to welcome the triplets home have been intense. The family has been busy refurbishing the home to accommodate the three new members, making renovations, painting, and organizing their belongings. The father, who is a farmer, is particularly excited, eagerly awaiting the warmth of his children when he returns from work.

Before leaving the hospital, the mother expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the birth and well-being of the babies and herself. She highlighted the constant attention, even outside regular hours, from the doctors and obstetricians, who were available to address any concerns or questions that arose.

Despite being a doctor and obstetrician herself, she admitted that experiencing motherhood for the first time has been challenging and, at times, terrifying.

Regarding the triplets’ progress, Dr. Olga María López Popa, who was in charge of their care in the Skin-to-Skin ward, confirmed to Vanguardia that the babies have progressed favorably, with adequate weight gain. Although initially, José Antonio and Alicia required additional treatments before being discharged, all the babies have surpassed the necessary weight to be ready to go home. They will follow a strict medical control in the Neurodevelopment consultation and other specialties to ensure their healthy growth, she noted.

Finally, Dr. José Antonio Marrero Martínez, who assisted in the delivery, expressed his honor in being the godfather of the triplets and responsible for taking them home. This event, according to the doctor, has been one of the most significant moments of his professional career.

Since 2020, the Mariana Grajales Hospital had not heard the simultaneous cry of triplets. Back then, Dayana Sifontes Linates gave birth to three boys named Ángel Daniel, Joel Davis, and Danis Joel. One of the latest reported triplet births in Cuba occurred last April at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Hospital in the province of Holguín, when the first cesarean section of triplets of the year was performed, with the mother and newborns in perfect health.
