Friday, September 20, 2024 by Joseph Morales

A recently arrived Cuban woman in the United States became the center of a humorous moment when she attempted to "hitchhike" at night, just as she would have done in her home country. In a video shared by user @lapatrona0801, the young woman is seen standing by the roadside while another woman, who is recording, jokingly asks, "What are you doing there, girl?" The newcomer confidently responds, "Well, darling, making signs to hitchhike."

Without wasting time, the woman recording warns her, "This is not Cuba," highlighting the cultural differences upon arriving in the U.S. The newcomer, however, remains unfazed: "I'm not ashamed to hitchhike." The conversation also touches on the Cuban woman's experiences at a Dollar Tree store where she went to buy food, eliciting more laughter.

Reactions on Social Media

The reactions from users came swiftly, with the post, accompanied by the hashtag #newcomers and garnering over a thousand interactions, sparking both humorous and empathetic comments. "We all made fools of ourselves when we first arrived in the USA"; "Don't be embarrassed, everyone here had a first day"; "She's a complete show"; "I laughed so hard"; "A lot happens when we come to this country"; "She's still green, but she'll mature little by little"; "So funny," read some of the messages. There were also more serious reactions from people concerned about the perception that hitchhiking in Cuba is done "to be with men."
