Cubans Face Long Lines in Miami for Driver's Licenses

Friday, September 20, 2024 by Claire Jimenez

The TikTok user @ardilla767 exposed the extensive lines Cubans endure in Miami to obtain a driver's license. According to her account, the queues start as early as 6 PM the previous day. Throughout the night, people, mainly Cubans, gather to secure their spot.

She highlighted that some individuals have turned these lines into a business opportunity, "They even rent chairs if you don't want to stand," the TikTok user noted. She also mentioned that during the wait, vendors sell coffee, empanadas, and other food items.

The Persistence of Cuban Practices

This situation has sparked criticism, as despite living in a more organized society like the United States, Cubans continue practices such as queuing, a deeply ingrained custom from the island. The urgency to obtain a driver's license is one of the primary reasons behind these long waits, a challenge that has become increasingly difficult to manage in Miami.

One user commented on the video, "Every day it becomes harder to complete any paperwork in Miami." He was referring to the hurdles created by the massive influx of immigrants into the city.

Since 2023, there have been numerous complaints about these lines for driver’s licenses in Miami. These incidents began after Governor Ron DeSantis invalidated licenses issued to undocumented migrants in five other states for use in Florida.

This new complaint has ignited debate among users about the efficiency of local services and the adaptation of immigrants to new realities.
