Friday, September 20, 2024 by Ava Castillo

This Thursday, five months after Cuban national Eduardo Sánchez was fatally shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Overtown, northeast Miami, his alleged killer appeared in court. The accused, who reportedly shot Sánchez without provocation, was arrested on Wednesday and has confessed to the crime, according to police.

The suspect has been identified as Alkeharey James Albert, just 19 years old. Authorities tracked down the suspect through witness testimonies and surveillance footage.

Family’s Reaction

Jennifer Sánchez, the daughter of the victim, expressed relief that her father's killer has been apprehended. "Last night, I received a call from the police telling me they had made an arrest, and I started crying tears of joy because I couldn't believe it. I've been praying a lot, and I'm happy that after all these months, we have a suspect in custody," she told the local press.

Jennifer, who keeps her father's ashes at home, remembers him as a fun-loving, humorous, and generous man. "My dad liked to drink, have his beverage and his music. I talked to him a lot; he was very funny, very giving, and would do anything to help others," she recounted.

The Crime

On April 20, neighbors in the area reported hearing four or five gunshots. When police arrived at the scene, they found Eduardo Sánchez shot inside his car in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at 365 Northwest 8th Street in Overtown, just a few meters from his home. Despite being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Sánchez did not survive.

Authorities continue to investigate and have only informed the family that it was "a random act that went wrong." However, the capture of the suspect brings some peace to the family.

The young man now faces a second-degree murder charge. He will remain in custody at the TGK Correctional Center without bail as he awaits trial. Albert is scheduled to appear before another judge on Friday.
