A taxi was left in ruins after being struck by another vehicle and flipping over in a dramatic accident on Vía Blanca, near the Playas del Este in Havana, early Sunday morning.

According to reports shared on Facebook, just after 6 a.m., a rental car from the company Taxis-Cuba was hit by another car, whose driver fled the scene, in the El Trébol area of Santa María del Mar beach. As a result of the collision, the taxi sustained severe damage and ended up overturned. However, despite the seriousness of the wreck, its occupants—the driver and a passenger—suffered only minor injuries, as confirmed by family members and witnesses.

"It's my husband, they are all fine, just minor injuries, thank God. It happened at 6:25 a.m. The car that caused the accident drove off, but luckily only the car was damaged," said Shey Figueredo, the driver's wife, in posts shared in the Facebook group "Accidentes Buses & Camiones por más experiencia y menos víctimas!"

Another individual specified that the driver, named Yandy, is from agency 2 of the state-run company and was taken to the Naval Hospital in the eastern part of the capital.

Frequent Road Incidents in Cuba

Last Friday, also on Vía Blanca, but in the Alamar area, a bus from the state-owned Transmetro company overturned after skidding on wet pavement and veering off the road. The driver only suffered minor injuries, according to a relative.

The day before, another traffic accident left five people injured, including a pregnant woman, when a passenger truck traveling the Havana-Santiago de Cuba route lost control after a tire burst and overturned on the Carretera Central, near Guáimaro in Camagüey province.

Official statistics recorded a 13% decrease in traffic accidents (543 fewer) in Cuba during the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023. Nevertheless, incidents on the nation's roads and streets remain a significant concern due to their frequency and often fatal outcomes.
