Tuesday, September 24, 2024 by Felix Ortiz

A traffic accident occurred this Monday in Santiago de Cuba, involving a privately owned vintage car, commonly referred to as an "almendrón," and a passenger bus at the intersection of Trocha and Santo Tomás streets near the well-known La Pelota Café.

Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta obtained images and firsthand accounts of the incident. Although the collision caused material damage to both vehicles, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.

Authorities have yet to determine which driver was at fault. Local officials have not released an official statement regarding the incident.

The crash site is located in a highly trafficked area of Santiago de Cuba, attracting the attention of numerous curious onlookers. Despite the significant impact, no severe damage occurred.

Accidents like this are common on Cuba’s roads, where the deteriorating infrastructure and the poor condition of many old vehicles still in use increase the risk of such events.

On September 2, 2024, a tragic accident in Santiago de Cuba claimed the life of a five-year-old boy when a motorcyclist, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, crashed into a bridge.

This was followed by another incident on September 16, where a young woman was injured in a collision between a motorcycle and a truck, highlighting the disregard for traffic signals in the city.

On September 23, a crash between two motorcycles on the National Highway near Santiago de Cuba left three people injured, including a young man who required surgery. Local authorities are still investigating the cause of this accident.

These incidents underscore the increasing road safety concerns in Santiago and the pressing need for greater caution on the roads.
