Worsening Weather Conditions Due to Heavy Rains in Western Cuba

Tuesday, September 24, 2024 by Mia Dominguez

The weather situation in western Cuba has deteriorated since Monday afternoon due to the approach of the "potential tropical cyclone nine."

State journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso shared recent images of the rain in Pinar del Río and other western Cuban areas like Artemisa, where residents are preparing for possible flooding.

As the system moves towards the northwestern Caribbean, the weather could worsen with heavy rains, landslides in mountainous areas, and strong winds. The meteorological phenomenon has all the conditions to develop into a hurricane in the coming hours, potentially being named Helene.

Cuban authorities have started to implement preventive measures, including the potential evacuation of residents in high-risk areas. Heavy rains are expected throughout the country and are anticipated to continue this week, raising concerns about possible flooding in urban, rural, and coastal regions.

Residents of Pinar del Río and Artemisa are advised to stay informed and follow civil protection teams' instructions as the system's progress is monitored, which also poses a threat to the Florida coast.
