Argentinian President Javier Milei delivered a forceful address at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations this Tuesday, where he sharply criticized the organization for allowing countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran to sit on its Human Rights Council.
Milei labeled these nations as "bloodthirsty dictatorships" and argued that they should not be part of a body that is supposed to uphold human rights. "In this house that claims to defend human rights, they have allowed bloodthirsty dictatorships like Cuba and Venezuela to join the Human Rights Council without the slightest reproach. In this same house, which claims to defend women's rights, they allow countries that punish women for showing their skin, like Iran, to join the committee against discrimination of women," the president declared, sparking immediate strong reactions within the hall.
Milei's Critique of the UN and Agenda 2030
Beyond his rebuke of the UN, Milei also targeted the Agenda 2030, describing it as a "socialist" imposition and depicting the UN as a "multi-tentacled Leviathan." He made it clear during his speech that his administration would distance itself from the international policies promoted by the organization, emphasizing that his government would not be complicit in these agendas.
Reactions to Milei's Speech
The speech drew criticism from figures like former Head of Government Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, who warned that such statements at the UN could lead to unnecessary diplomatic tensions. However, others praised Milei's address, calling him "the best president of Argentina," and lauding his boldness. "Javier Milei just dismantled the UN's progressive agenda and wants to create a freedom agenda instead. He's the best vote in history," one social media user commented.
