Cuban Uses Metropolitan Bank Card in Brazil: "A Magical Act"

Wednesday, September 25, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

Dorian Carbonell, a Cuban barber and stylist, recently visited Brazil and became the star of a viral video that has had people laughing across social media.

After enjoying a meal with friends at a restaurant, the moment came to settle the bill. With full confidence, he pulled out his Metropolitan Bank card from Havana to cover the expenses. These cards are restricted to use within the Cuban financial system and are not functional outside the island. However, in a surprising twist, the waiter, instead of pointing out the impracticality, played along with the charade.

The waiter took the card, swiped it through the machine, and with flawless acting, processed the supposed payment. He even handed over a final receipt as if everything had gone smoothly.

Social Media Reactions: Humor and Sarcasm

The video, shared on Dorian's social media, quickly sparked a flood of humorous and sarcastic comments. Many of these comments reflect the frustration Cubans feel about their money's lack of value beyond their borders.

What could have been a simple joke among friends turned into a reflection on the economic hardships faced by ordinary Cubans. Reactions on social media were both creative and varied. One comment humorously noted that Dorian had "unlocked the blockade," poking fun at the economic restrictions in Cuba.

Another comment said, "They don't work here, they're going to work in Brazil?" highlighting the absurdity of the situation. Many pointed out that the Metropolitan Bank must be amused by the video, while Transfermóvil, the platform enabling payments in Cuba, might be less than thrilled with the publicity.

The Waiter's "Magic Trick"

Cuban humor shone through in other comments, with some praising the waiter's act as "the best magic trick human eyes have seen." One of the most clever responses mentioned that people were now asking Dorian to send his old Metropolitan card to the United States as a keepsake, since it's clearly useless for anything else.

Many Cubans view with sadness how their currency holds no value abroad, making the video more than just a joke for some. Through humor, Dorian highlighted the harsh reality of Cuba's economic isolation. As one comment aptly put it, "You played with the hopes of millions of Cubans."
