Vehicle Overturns on Miami Airport Runway in Nighttime Accident

Wednesday, September 25, 2024 by Samantha Mendoza

A vehicle from the Miami International Airport (MIA) experienced a mishap on Tuesday night, ending up overturned on the runway. Surveillance cameras captured the moment, which was later shared on Instagram by the user Only in Dade.

The footage shows airport workers rushing to assist immediately. "The person in the overturned vehicle reportedly suffered a leg fracture," stated the post's author. It appears the cart collided with a wheel chock, causing it to lose stability. "They had just finished a flight, and he drove over something," commented one user. Others speculate that speeding was involved. "It looked like he hit the brakes, but man, he was going pretty fast, making the tractor bounce and lose control," noted another.

Another observer mentioned, "He wasn't wearing a seatbelt. How else would you get thrown out of a vehicle?" A young woman revealed that the injured person is Dominican and the airplane on the runway belonged to American Airlines. "They left the chocks on the runway, and those tractors get destabilized. If the tire hits something, they can bounce. He didn't see the chock and hit it, got thrown out of the tractor because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt. He came out, and the tractor crushed both his legs and an arm. The guy was Dominican and super nice. It's really sad for him and his family. I hope A.A. helps cover all the bills and expenses," she detailed.

Previous Incidents at MIA

In June, a fuel truck overturned on MIA's runway, requiring the intervention of 15 Miami-Dade County fire units to manage the dangerous situation. The Signature Flight Support tanker overturned around 5:45 am, causing flammable liquid to spread over a large area of the private jet runway. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene at 4200 Northwest 21st Street, setting up orange cones to keep people away and disconnecting the vehicle's ignition sources.
