The state-run media outlet Cubadebate published an article on Wednesday defending the popular Cuban reggaeton artist Michael Fernando Sierra Miranda, known by his stage name "El Micha." The defense comes after a controversial incident on a Miami TV show.
On a recent episode of “El Toro Loco Show,” El Micha, who splits his time between Havana and Florida, reacted strongly when asked about his frequent trips to the island. The artist abruptly left the studio, stating, "I go back and forth because I want to."
The article on Cubadebate, which includes points discussed by journalist Arleen Rodríguez in her podcast, defended El Micha's reaction. It argued that the reggaeton star was reacting to the "traditional harassment" many Cuban artists face when they are pressured to explicitly condemn the Cuban government as a form of "political toll." This demand, according to the article, serves as an implicit condition to avoid having their shows and concerts boycotted in Florida.
The piece also highlighted comments from journalist Bárbara Betancourt, who pointed out that such pressures are not new. Many artists have been forced to take a stand against the Cuban government to work in Miami.

Cubadebate emphasized that instead of discussing his music or career, the show where El Micha appeared focused on his political stance. According to the outlet, this is a common practice among media linked to "anti-Cuban groups" in Florida. The article praised El Micha for his courage in standing firm and speaking "truths that fit into less than two minutes."
Rodríguez and Betancourt were not the only ones to support the Havana-born artist. Former spy Gerardo Hernández Nordelo also defended him on social media platform X, stating, "In Miami, there are inquisitors who claim they left 'seeking freedom,' but now they are afraid to step out of line and want to burn those who do."
El Micha's Controversial Stance
The controversy surrounding El Micha extends beyond his frequent trips to Cuba. His stance has largely alienated the Cuban exile community in Miami. In a recent interview with Tony Dandrades, the reggaeton star made it clear that he intends to continue living in Miami while traveling to Cuba to perform, especially after his last album for which he filmed several music videos on the island.
El Micha explained his evolving stance on Cuba: "I realized who I am and where I come from. When you look back, you have to acknowledge everything you've achieved for yourself."
Undoubtedly, El Micha is not on good terms with the media or influencers. After the controversy sparked by his interview on “El Toro Loco Show,” he is unwilling to speak to anyone. Just hours ago, the reggaetonero was at a barbershop in Miami when influencer Carnota approached him with a question, leading to yet another heated reaction from the artist.
