Forget Who You Were, This Is a Fresh Start: Cuban in the U.S. Advises Newcomers

Thursday, September 26, 2024 by Aaron Delgado

The Cuban content creator @i.am.ivey, recognized for his advice on TikTok, recently shared an uplifting message for those who have recently arrived in the United States or another country in search of a new life.

In his video, Ivey emphasized the need to leave behind one's previous identity in Cuba and start fresh with humility and a willingness to learn. "Forget who you were, this is a fresh start," Ivey began, explaining that while many newcomers arrive with prior skills as electricians, engineers, or builders, they must be prepared to learn a new trade from scratch in their new country. "You need to understand that people don't like it when you come to work and say, 'Back in Cuba, I was an electrician'... things are different here," he added.

Ivey stressed that maintaining a conceited attitude or thinking one knows everything can close doors to new opportunities: "If you go in with the attitude that you know it all, no one will teach you anything, and you'll waste years in this country without learning anything, I guarantee it," he warned.

Embrace New Realities for Success

His central advice was clear: accept the new reality and work hard to acquire the necessary skills in the host country. According to Ivey, this is the key to succeeding in this "new beginning."

Ivey's video has sparked a wave of reactions on TikTok, with many users resonating with his message: "Thank you, brother"; "If they come here and the first thing they do is say 'I was an engineer back there,' and then they can't do anything here"; "True, all your videos are really spectacular. You have a vision for everything and explain the reality of things. I admire you, my king"; "Clear as always, just like everything you've said here, the reality of the U.S.!" commented some users.

Shared Experiences and New Opportunities

Many others shared their experiences and echoed the video's sentiments: "Here we are born again"; "Oh, tell me about it, I had to reinvent myself many times, but this great country offers the opportunity to change and move forward," others joined the discussion.
