The imminent arrival of Hurricane Helene, potentially reaching Category 3 or 4 by Thursday, has led to heavy rain and flooding in southern Florida, particularly affecting Gulf Coast counties and Miami-Dade. The rapidly progressing Category 2 storm in the Gulf of Mexico started impacting southern Florida on Thursday with intense rainfall and strong winds, according to Local 10.

The wide-reaching cyclone's rain bands struck the Keys, where waves battered the iconic 90-mile marker buoy in Key West. Gusty winds swayed the lush royal poincianas and sturdy seagrape bushes, while dried leaves and debris quickly clogged some drains, causing minor street flooding. Volunteers from the community organized efforts to clear the drains and prevent further flooding.

In light of the threat, Monroe County schools and district offices were closed on Thursday. Although the heavy rains have not caused significant damage in Key West, the streets have been affected by flooding. Miami has also reported strong winds and heavy downpours.

In Cuba, Helene had already triggered evacuations in flood-prone areas in the provinces of Pinar del Río and Artemisa before heading north. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency across the state as the hurricane continues its path toward the coast. The cyclone is expected to make landfall Thursday night in the Big Bend area as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, heightening concerns for the Gulf-facing coastal regions of Florida.

Local authorities have urged residents to take precautions and follow evacuation orders in vulnerable areas.
