Stunning Footage of Flooding in Batabanó Caused by Hurricane Helene

Saturday, September 28, 2024 by Isabella Rojas

Hurricane Helene has left a significant impact on western Cuba, triggering severe coastal flooding in the low-lying areas of Mayabeque province, particularly in the Surgidero de Batabanó. Photos and videos from the scene highlight the extent of the sea surges, which battered the southern coast for hours under the influence of the hurricane's powerful winds and broad circulation.

While Pinar del Río and Mayabeque were the most affected provinces, the most striking images emerged from Batabanó in Mayabeque. Here, water levels rose over a meter, flooding homes. The intense waves in the Surgidero de Batabanó led to significant damage, with seawater engulfing urban areas and severely impacting local infrastructure.

In Pinar del Río, heavy rains and coastal floods in areas like Boca de Galafre in San Juan y Martínez municipality caused rivers to overflow, affecting several municipalities in the province.

Captured footage from the devastated regions demonstrates the immense power of Hurricane Helene, which claimed over 40 lives in the United States after making landfall as a Category 4 storm.
