In an extraordinary rescue operation, Cuban firefighters saved a man who had fallen into the ventilation shaft of a tunnel in Santiago de Cuba, an incident captured on video by bystanders.

The mishap occurred on Saturday afternoon near the Antonio Maceo Polytechnic, commonly known as Arts and Crafts. The victim, 38-year-old David Cleger Romero, plummeted into an old shelter's hole in the area.

"Teachers at the Arts and Crafts School heard the scream and immediately called the firefighters," disclosed a teacher on duty to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

Eyewitnesses reported that firefighters and rescue teams were delayed in their response despite being alerted promptly. Locals in the area noted that these shafts are extremely deep, making it a miracle that Cleger Romero's cries for help were heard, enabling his rescue.

Cleger Romero was transported to Saturnino Lora Hospital, where doctors have stated that he is expected to recover from his injuries.
