Cuban Influencer in the U.S. Claps Back at Critic Over Luxury Lifestyle Accusations

Wednesday, October 2, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

A Cuban influencer residing in the United States, known as @mialiaboutique_, has sparked a heated debate on TikTok after responding to a comment accusing her of flaunting her luxurious lifestyle while neglecting to help people back in Cuba. The comment, which read, “Why don’t you help the people in Cuba? There are people struggling there while you show off your luxuries. Are you really Cuban? I don’t understand,” prompted a fiery reply from the young woman, who held nothing back.

“Look, don’t talk about what you don’t know. I have family in Cuba, and I help them as much as I can, but it’s not my responsibility to support everyone,” she asserted in the video, visibly upset. “I assist where I can, but I can’t abandon my life here to solve everyone else’s problems,” she clarified, concluding with, “I’m just floored by your comment, floored!”

The video has already garnered over 48,000 views and more than 4,300 likes, with comments continuing to pour in, generating a wave of reactions. Numerous followers came to the influencer's defense: “Why do people think that when someone leaves Cuba to improve their life, they are obligated to help those who stay?” commented one user, to which @mialiaboutique_ responded emphatically, “Exactly, they believe it’s mandatory.”

Support and Criticism Pour In

Other users were more blunt in their criticism of the original comment: “People just talk for the sake of talking, they want to live there and have us support them from here, what’s wrong with them!” remarked another follower. Someone else added, “Now they want you to fix Cuba, what is this, my God?”

Among the most supported comments was one that said, “If you leave Cuba, it’s to improve your own life, not to support people in Cuba,” reflecting the sentiment of many Cuban emigrants who face similar situations to the influencer.

Mixed Reactions Highlight a Sensitive Issue

However, not everyone agreed with @mialiaboutique_’s response. “She’s not referring to your family, but to people in general. I don’t understand why you’re taking it so personally,” opined another user, attempting to soften the debate, although this was a minority view.

What is evident is that the topic strikes a chord among Cubans in the diaspora, continuing to generate divided opinions as the video keeps accumulating views and comments.
