Severe Flooding Hits Havana After Heavy Rains

Tuesday, October 1, 2024 by Samantha Mendoza

Several districts in Havana experienced severe flooding on Monday due to intense rainfall in the capital. Videos shared on social media documented flooding in Plaza de la Revolución, Diez de Octubre, Cerro, Playa, and La Habana Vieja, among other areas.

A striking video captured a car stranded at the intersection of Amenidad and 20 de Mayo streets, near the Latinoamericano stadium. Bystanders expressed concern for the driver's safety.

In the same vicinity, a fire truck could also be seen immobilized by the high water levels, almost resembling a submarine given the circumstances.

The flooding was also severe on the dilapidated Calzada de Diez de Octubre, where water flowed like a river.

Buenos Aires Avenue in the Cerro district, known for frequent flooding, once again saw water threatening to submerge park benches near the Suchel factory.

Images shared online showed that even Boyeros Avenue, near the Bohemia magazine offices in Plaza de la Revolución, was flooded in some areas.

Flooding was also reported in La Palma and Playa, making it a day of concern not only because of the usual collapses that follow heavy rains but also due to the ongoing hygiene crisis plaguing the capital.

Many social media users pointed out that although the rains were intense, the flooding was exacerbated by clogged drains and sewers filled with garbage.
