Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel held a meeting in Mexico City with the newly inaugurated President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, who took office on the morning of Tuesday, October 1st. In a post on X, the Caribbean island's president congratulated her “on behalf of the people and government of Cuba” and wished her “much success in the advancement of the Fourth Transformation of Mexico's public life.”

Díaz-Canel emphasized his desire to "further strengthen bilateral ties and shared interests for the development of our nations." The Cuban leader arrived in Mexico last Sunday, heading a delegation that included his wife, Lis Cuesta, who is a Ministry of Culture official.

On Tuesday, Díaz-Canel was among those who attended Sheinbaum's inauguration. She ascended to the presidency after winning the election on June 2nd and following the end of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's (AMLO) six-year term. AMLO bid farewell to the attending leaders on Monday.

During a separate meeting with diplomatic staff at the Cuban Embassy in Mexico, Díaz-Canel praised both the country and the outgoing president. “This is an important country, a strategic partner for Cuba,” he stated.

Throughout AMLO's presidency, which began in December 2018, Díaz-Canel officially visited Mexico at least five times, while AMLO made only one official visit to Cuba as Mexico's president.
