Cubans in Miami Celebrate "Croqueta Day" with a Taste of Spain

Wednesday, October 2, 2024 by Emily Vargas

On October 1st, the residents of Miami-Dade and Broward counties enthusiastically celebrated Croqueta Day, paying tribute to one of the most beloved dishes in Cuban cuisine in South Florida.

While the croqueta originally hails from France, it has found a warm welcome in the Cuban restaurants of Miami, where it has become a local culinary favorite. In 2018, the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County officially recognized this celebration in honor of the popular chain, Sergio's Restaurant, founded by Blanca Cabrera (Blanca Gazitua) and her mother in 1975.

Sergio’s Restaurant marks Croqueta Day each year by offering free croquetas to its customers. With a history of serving over 20 million croquetas, the chain continues to be a staple in the community.

In 2024, Sergio’s Restaurant celebrated Croqueta Day by sharing their passion with fans. All their locations provided patrons with the opportunity to try a new recipe: Serrano ham and Manchego cheese croquetas. This year, the flavors of Spain took center stage in Miami's Cuban kitchens.
