Wednesday, October 2, 2024 by Claire Jimenez

Nicolle Valls, granddaughter of Felipe Valls, the founder of the renowned Versailles Restaurant in Miami, has revealed the secret behind their iconic Cuban sandwiches. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Nicolle reminisced about her family memories and her experiences growing up in the distinguished Cuban-American establishment, which has been serving the Miami community since its opening in 1971.

"Growing up in the restaurant industry and being part of Versailles was amazing," Nicolle remarked. She emphasized the significant role the restaurant plays within the Cuban-American community and the city of Miami as a whole.

A Cultural Hub for Cuban-Americans

For many Cuban-Americans, Versailles is more than just a place to enjoy a meal or snack; it is a cherished destination for celebrating events connected to their homeland's history and their adopted country.

How to Make the Iconic Cuban Sandwich

One of Versailles' most celebrated dishes is the Cuban sandwich, which Nicolle describes as "comfort food" that has endured thanks to family recipes passed down through generations. "These are recipes from individuals who worked in the kitchen when we first started, and they have been handed down over the decades to what they are today," she explained.

The ingredients for the famous Cuban sandwich from Versailles, which serves two to four people, include:

  • 1 Cuban bread loaf, 2 feet long (60 cm)
  • 12 oz. of sweet ham
  • 7 oz. of roast pork loin
  • 7 oz. of Swiss cheese
  • Mustard
  • Pickles
  • Butter

The preparation steps are as follows:

  1. Preheat a large skillet over medium-high heat or use a sandwich press at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Slice the bread horizontally. Spread mustard on one half and layer the pork, ham, Swiss cheese, and pickles on the other half.
  3. Join the two halves, cut the sandwich into desired portions, and butter the top exterior.
  4. Place the sandwiches in the preheated skillet or sandwich press.
  5. Heat for 2 to 3 minutes. If using a skillet, flip to brown evenly. Wait until the sandwich is thoroughly heated and the cheese is melted.

According to Valls, the secret to Versailles' Cuban sandwich lies in the homemade Cuban bread and the perfect blend of flavors, making this dish a classic in Cuban-American cuisine.
