Renowned Cuban singer-songwriter Marta Valdés has passed away at the age of 90 in Havana this Thursday. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Culture, which honored her illustrious career as a singer, songwriter, and music critic.
"Her exquisite artistic sensitivity, poetic words, and immense musical talent made her a standout figure in the second generation of the 'filin' movement, serving as a bridge between the founding masters of the genre and the singer-songwriters of the Nueva Trova Movement, who revered and acknowledged her as an indispensable reference," the statement declared.
The Legacy of Marta Valdés
Born in Havana in 1934, Valdés began her professional music career in 1955 with the composition of the bolero "Palabras," a song that became synonymous with her identity throughout her life. Her other beloved compositions include "No es preciso," "En la imaginación," "Canción simple," "Deja que siga sola," and "Tú no sospechas," which were popularized by artists like Elena Burke, Bola de Nieve, Cheo Feliciano, Omara Portuondo, and Pablo Milanés.

Singer Rochy Ameneiro added, "Thank you, Marta Valdés: for my favorite song, for inviting me to sing, for welcoming us into your home, for loving my son and sharing so much that only you two understood; for teaching me Teresita Fernández's work, for gifting us beautiful words, and for everything you leave to Cuban and global culture."
