The U.S. Embassy in Havana has announced a significant update to the immigrant visa interview process, set to take effect on October 15, 2024. Beginning on this date, all immigrant visa applicants will be required to complete a new mandatory Document Review process before their interview, according to information released on the embassy's website.

Applicants must schedule their appointments at least one week in advance to complete this review. Appointments can be made through the following methods:

Email: visashavana@state.gov with the subject "A88 Document Review" Phone: 7839 4152 (Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.)

The embassy states that this new procedure aims to streamline the visa process and ensure all documents are in order before the interview.

Expansion of Consular Services

Back in August, the embassy revealed a major expansion of its consular services, with a focus on visa issuance. Starting on August 19, Cuban citizens with approved temporary work petitions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), as well as those participating in exchange programs with an approved Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status, could schedule their visa interviews at the diplomatic mission.

This significant change was made in response to the rising demand for consular services, providing Cubans increased access to employment and educational opportunities in the United States.

Current Visa Limitations

Despite these advancements, the embassy has yet to offer services for B-1 business visas or B-2 tourist visas, which remain unavailable through the Havana office.

Reopening of USCIS Office in Cuba

In August 2023, the U.S. government reopened its USCIS office in Cuba after being closed for nearly five years. Since then, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been actively developing a comprehensive communication program to inform the Cuban public about its services on the island.
