Western Cuba is on high alert as the formidable Hurricane Milton approaches, bringing with it the threat of winds exceeding 50 km/h and potential flooding. According to the latest update from the Forecast Center of the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET), released at noon on October 8, the hurricane, now downgraded to a Category Four on the Saffir-Simpson scale, has maximum sustained winds of 240 kilometers per hour with even stronger gusts.

Currently, Milton is situated approximately 365 kilometers west-northwest of Cape San Antonio, the westernmost point of Cuba, moving east-northeast at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. It is anticipated that in the coming hours, the hurricane will veer northeastward, nearing the western coast of the Florida Peninsula.

Impacts on Cuba's Western Provinces

As Milton progresses, the western region of Cuba is already experiencing sustained winds from the south to southwest ranging between 20 and 35 kilometers per hour. These winds are expected to intensify to between 35 and 50 kilometers per hour, with stronger gusts anticipated, according to the report. This weather pattern will primarily impact the provinces stretching from Pinar del Río to Mayabeque.

Coastal Risks and Flooding

The INSMET warns of the potential for significant swells along the southern coast of Isla de la Juventud and Pinar del Río, with light to moderate coastal flooding expected from Pinar del Río to Mayabeque, including Isla de la Juventud. By Wednesday, moderate flooding is anticipated on the northern coast, affecting the Havana Malecon as well.

Rain and Precautions

The hurricane's feeder bands are expected to produce rain and showers in the western parts of the country, with some areas potentially experiencing intense downpours throughout the day. Authorities urge residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard against the potential arrival of hazardous weather conditions. Another update is scheduled for 6:00 pm on Tuesday.

Already, Milton has begun to wreak havoc in Cuba, with initial reports of flooding emerging from Surgidero de Batabanó in the province of Mayabeque.
