A security camera mounted on a private residence in Havana caught the bizarre theft of some cushions in the middle of the night, despite the porch being fully illuminated. Michel Bonora, a Facebook user, shared the footage on social media, seeking help from anyone who might have information about this peculiar theft in Cuba's capital.
"On Wednesday, around 1:00 am, a scoundrel entered the porch and stole some cushions. If anyone knows him, please message me," Bonora stated. The scarcity affecting Cubans is severe, but this cushion theft transcends necessity or resale value—it's an act that borders on malevolence, absurdity, and senselessness.
The thief walked down the street, hopped the fence, and began to assess what he could take. Unable to carry the porch furniture, he shamelessly opted for the cushions, leaving the set incomplete. Criminals in Havana and other Cuban cities are breaching fences to steal anything from simple fruits like soursop or mangos to furniture, plant pots, and garden trees.
Security Measures Prove Ineffective
The lack of police oversight in residential neighborhoods is glaring, and even though homeowners install security cameras, they fail to curb the rampant crime. The thieves show no fear of being recorded, as the penalties for such offenses are minimal—or even nonexistent—in the country.
Yet, ironically, posting a government critique on Facebook could result in fines amounting to thousands of pesos or even imprisonment. This stark contrast highlights the skewed priorities and the oppressive environment fostered by the socialist regime in Cuba.
