Cuban Woman Mistakes Dolphin for Shark in Varadero Beach Adventure

Saturday, October 12, 2024 by Matthew Diaz

In a light-hearted incident at Varadero Beach, a young Cuban woman experienced a moment of panic. As she enjoyed a calm morning by the sea, someone from the shore urged her to exit the water, having spotted what appeared to be a shark from afar.

The individual involved was TikToker Sandra Saure (@sandra_saure), who was recording videos on her phone when the unexpected fright occurred. "Someone yelled at me to get out of the ocean because they saw a creature, a marine creature, but we couldn't tell exactly what it was. They said, 'Look, Sandra, it's a shark.' I was like, 'A shark? Really?' But I was already out of the water," Sandra recounted with amusement.

Although Sandra believed she had seen a shark in Varadero, locals explained that it was far more likely to have been a dolphin or a porpoise. These creatures, known as toninas, are among the smallest marine dolphins globally. They are a common sight along the Cuban coastline and are frequently seen swimming near Varadero Beach.
