Sunday, October 13, 2024 by Hannah Aguilar

The art of pigeon racing, also known as colombophilia, is gaining traction as a popular hobby in Cuba, particularly in provinces like Camagüey. Recently, the much-anticipated Young Bird Championship kicked off in this region, drawing the interest of enthusiasts and breeders from across the nation.

A Surprising Contender Takes the Spotlight

While the Cuban Pigeon Racing Federation has yet to officially declare this pigeon the provincial champion, its performance has already captured the attention of the nation. The pigeon, affectionately named Otani, belongs to a dedicated breeder from Camagüey who has gained recognition for his fervor in training and closely monitoring his pigeons. Otani astounded everyone by returning to his loft in record time, outpacing all other young birds in the competition.

Unprecedented Performance in the Skies

"You're the best, buddy! You're an absolute machine!" exclaimed Reinier Veloz, passionately chasing across his rooftop to welcome his victorious bird. The pigeons were released in Placetas, a town in Villa Clara province, flying an impressive 210 kilometers back to their home in Camagüey. Unable to contain his excitement, Veloz leaped with joy, proudly showcasing Otani's remarkable achievement alongside other carrier pigeons from his team.

The Timeless Fascination with Carrier Pigeons

The intelligence and abilities of carrier pigeons have captivated people for generations. These birds can navigate back home from vast distances, thanks to their acute sense of direction, which some studies suggest is linked to Earth's magnetic field. Historically, pigeons have been crucial in delivering messages, especially during wartime. Some have even been decorated for their contributions to national sovereignty and life-saving missions.

The Central Region's Premier Pigeon Racing Event

The Young Bird Championship in Camagüey stands out as one of the year's most eagerly awaited events for pigeon racing enthusiasts in Central Cuba. Those invested in this sport devote significant care to their birds, ensuring they receive specialized diets and optimal living conditions to perform at their best in flight competitions.
