Oil Spill Triggers Numerous Accidents in Havana

Thursday, October 17, 2024 by Alexander Flores

On Wednesday, a series of accidents occurred at the intersection of Vento and San Miguel in Havana, where an oil spill has led to multiple motorcycle falls and car collisions. The incident was reported by Thaimy Carrasco Valladares on Facebook, who noted that the spill was caused by a crane losing a substantial amount of oil on the road.

Carrasco shared a video capturing the fall of a motorcyclist and used an emoji to criticize the absence of fire brigade services to clean the avenue. This kind of incident isn’t a new phenomenon on the island. Back in April, a similar situation arose in Santiago de Cuba. An oil spill on Avenida Patria, combined with a blackout that left the area without street lighting, caused several motorcyclists to skid in the darkness.

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta posted images of firefighters cleaning the affected street, a critical thoroughfare connecting to the Provincial Heritage Cemetery. In a separate incident in March, a cyclist suffered injuries after failing to see a pothole in a darkened street in Holguín. This was a result of the regime's energy-saving campaign amid the country's severe power crisis.
