Amid Blackouts, Guantánamo Officials Urge Residents to Bring Rechargeable Lamps for Gas Purchases

Friday, October 18, 2024 by Christopher Ramirez

The scarcity of resources in Cuba has reached a new low, prompting officials in Guantánamo to ask residents to use their own resources to light up the gas distribution points in the province. Maylín Rodríguez Fuentes, the head of the Fuel Marketing Company CUPET in Guantánamo, made this request through the local television station, Solvisión. She appealed to the public, noting the lack of electricity and earlier nightfall, to "help maintain order. If possible, bring a rechargeable lamp to assist at the sales points during nighttime when visibility is poor, allowing our team to work without issues," she stated.

Rodríguez Fuentes emphasized the objective is to ensure everyone can acquire their gas cylinder before supplies run out at the distribution sites. "Our entire team is dedicated to this goal, and we are confident we will achieve it," she asserted, despite the solutions being constrained.

She revealed that Guantánamo received only about 100 cylinders, which falls short of meeting the high demand for this crucial fuel. The Cuban people are grappling with one of the most severe energy crises in their history.

The Strain of Energy Shortages

Just over a week ago, the Cuban government announced the partial unloading of a ship carrying liquefied gas, which would be used to attempt to ease the country's strained situation. With ongoing power outages severely impacting daily life, gas has become essential for cooking. Many Cuban households, lacking electric stoves, have had to resort to cooking with wood or charcoal.

This past Thursday, the situation appeared to worsen, with predicted power outages reaching a record 1,678 MW. Social media is a testament to the growing frustration of citizens who are desperately seeking swift solutions to the mounting crisis.
