The U.S. Embassy in Cuba issued a warning to American citizens on the island late Friday night regarding a widespread power outage impacting the entire nation. This blackout followed an unexpected shutdown of the Guiteras thermoelectric plant, Cuba's largest power facility. "Today, Cuba's entire electrical grid failed due to an issue at one of the country's main power stations. The timeline for restoring power remains unclear. Emergency services are expected to continue operating, but U.S. citizens in Cuba or those planning to travel there should exercise caution," the embassy's statement advised.

Additionally, embassy officials highlighted that the power grid collapse has been accompanied by disruptions in internet and cellular services. In light of this emergency, they recommended staying informed via local news sources, stocking up on water and food, keeping phones charged, reviewing contingency plans, and maintaining frequent contact with family and friends.

To assist with this, the embassy provided the consular assistance phone numbers for Havana (+53 7 839-4100; after-hours press 1, then 0) and the email address acshavana@state.gov. They also shared contact information for the State Department's Office of Consular Affairs (888-407-4747 or 202-501-4444) and advised registering at step.state.gov for security updates and information related to Cuba. This situation is ongoing and developing.
