On Sunday, the Cuban government declared a halt to all non-essential administrative and educational activities for the following three days. This decision comes in the wake of Hurricane Oscar's impending approach to the eastern part of the island and ongoing efforts to restore the national power grid, which completely collapsed last Friday.
The official communication, disseminated through the Cuban presidency's website and social media, stated: "In light of Hurricane Oscar's imminent passage through our nation and the subsequent recovery phase, as well as the ongoing restoration work on the national electrical system, we have resolved to suspend non-essential administrative and educational activities on Monday, October 21, Tuesday, October 22, and Wednesday, October 23. Essential services for the population will remain operational."
The statement elaborated that workers mobilized due to these circumstances would continue to receive their average salary. Meanwhile, those unable to attend work because of the suspension will be compensated with a salary guarantee equivalent to the pay scale of their respective positions.
