The National Civil Defense Staff announced on Sunday the activation of the Cyclonic Alarm Phase for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, and Las Tunas in anticipation of the impending arrival of Hurricane Oscar.

This decision was based on information provided by the Forecast Center of the Meteorology Institute, which warns that Hurricane Oscar remains at category one on the Saffir-Simpson scale and may intensify within the next 12 hours. This was reported by the newspaper Venceremos in a note published on social media.

Weather conditions in the eastern region are expected to worsen, with heavy rains, showers, and thunderstorms, particularly affecting mountainous areas and vulnerable locations. The forecast predicts rainfall accumulation between 100 and 200 millimeters over the next 24 hours, along with a gradual increase in wind strength.

Furthermore, the northern coastal areas are already experiencing strong swells, which will extend towards the northern coast of Las Tunas, potentially causing moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas.

While Camagüey remains in the Alert Phase, Ciego de Ávila continues under the Informative Phase. Authorities urge the public to stay informed through media outlets and strictly follow the guidance of local authorities and Civil Defense directives.

The National Civil Defense Staff, in collaboration with the Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources Institutes, is closely monitoring Hurricane Oscar's development, as indicated in their bulletin. The hurricane is expected to make landfall on the northern coast between Guantánamo and Holguín later this Sunday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has cautioned on the social network X that the cyclone "is approaching the northern coast of eastern Cuba, where conditions will soon deteriorate."
