Fire Erupts at Raw Materials Depot in Güira de Melena

Monday, October 21, 2024 by Daniel Colon

Yesterday afternoon, a significant fire broke out at a raw materials center in the town of Güira de Melena, located within the Artemisa province. The blaze, which was visible throughout much of the area, drew a large number of locals who took to social media to share the news. As of now, the cause of the fire remains a mystery.

Firefighters promptly arrived at the scene in an effort to control the flames. However, no official information has been released by the authorities regarding the origins or details of the incident, and the state-controlled media has yet to report on the matter. Residents are left waiting for answers while voicing their concerns online about the release of toxic substances into the air, resulting from the burning of plastic and other materials stored for recycling.

Community Reactions and Concerns

One social media user noted that the fire consumed all the stored plastic. Others have speculated that the incident was not the result of an electrical short circuit but rather a deliberate act, possibly as a form of protest. This theory stems from the severe conditions currently affecting the country, exacerbated by the ongoing energy crisis that has plunged Cuba into darkness since October 18th.
