Body Found Floating in Santiago de Cuba Bay

Tuesday, October 22, 2024 by Edward Lopez

On Tuesday morning, the body of a man was discovered floating in the waters of Santiago de Cuba Bay, with initial reports suggesting he may have drowned. The grim discovery occurred near the Frank País Mill, located along the tourist road of the Altamira district in Santiago de Cuba, as reported on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.

The identity of the victim remains unknown, though locals mentioned to Mayeta Labrada that he could have been a fisherman residing on 11th Street in the area. As of the publication of this article, no official statement has been released regarding the body found in the bay, nor is there confirmation that drowning was the cause of death. If confirmed, this would add to the growing number of drowning incidents reported in Santiago de Cuba in recent months.

In a recent incident at the end of September, a man in his early 50s tragically drowned at Siboney Beach. Earlier in August, a nine-year-old boy named Danger Curo Padilla from Boniato drowned while swimming in the Chalons reservoir, the oldest in the country. During the same month, another drowning claimed the life of Amarilis Asin Sosa at Buey Cabón Beach in Guamá municipality.

Back in late May, a young man lost his life at La Estrella Beach, a small coastal strip near the Santiago de Cuba Morro. Just days before this incident, two young individuals drowned at Sardinero Beach, also located in the main municipality of Santiago de Cuba. This occurred while a group of nine people, including three minors, were swimming in this treacherous area where swimming is officially prohibited.

The first victim in that incident was identified as Rachel Mora Torres, a 20-year-old resident of Mangos de Baraguá. The other was Yasel Alberto Bicet, also 20, from the Abel Santamaría neighborhood, whose body was found hours after he was reported missing.
