Hidden Dangers in Havana: Unprotected Electrical Systems Pose Threat to Children

Saturday, October 26, 2024 by Emma Garcia

A recent investigation conducted by the CiberCuba team through the streets of Old Havana and Central Havana uncovered numerous locations where electrical wires are dangerously exposed. These cables, often lying at ground level, are easily accessible to pedestrians, including children, raising significant safety concerns.

Captured this week, images from streets such as Ánimas and Monserrate; Consulado and Refugio; and Refugio and Industria reveal unprotected wires and poorly maintained electrical boxes, flagrantly violating safety standards and putting locals and passersby at substantial risk.

Some of these hazardous wires and boxes are situated in bustling public areas, while others are in dilapidated buildings and government work sites, with cables sprawling across sidewalks without any protective measures. Highlighted intersections include central streets like Chacón between Habana and Aguiar; and Cuba and Chacón, as well as crowded locations like the Solar de la California, situated at Crespo and Colón.

These hazardous sites not only pose a public safety threat, but also underscore the crumbling urban infrastructure in Havana, which residents often describe as "falling apart." The exposure of such dangers reflects the broader issues of neglect and decay within the city's essential systems.
