This Tuesday, a balcony collapse in Havana's Vedado neighborhood resulted in injuries to at least one person, an elderly man found lying on the ground, groaning in pain and pleading not to be touched. Local residents quickly gathered to offer assistance, but the victim was in severe pain and unable to move on his own.
Journalist Mario J. Penton expressed his outrage on social media, stating, "Havana is crumbling while they (the government) continue to steal..." The incident took place when a building's balcony in El Vedado gave way, injuring the man who was reportedly underneath it. Infrastructure collapses have been common in Old Havana and Central Havana, but now they are affecting the well-known Havana district, famous for its old mansions that have significantly deteriorated due to lack of upkeep.
Recurring Infrastructure Failures
In June, three individuals were hurt when another balcony collapsed onto the "El Tablazo" café, located on 1st Street, between C and D. According to Carlos Espinosa Betancourt, who shared details of the event on the Facebook group "Maravilloso Malecón," the injured parties were treated at Calixto García Hospital.
