The father of Lester Domínguez, a young Cuban who was brutally attacked with a machete in Holguín in March of last year, has shared a video showing his son's rehabilitation at Julio Díaz Hospital in Havana. The footage, posted on Facebook, captures Lester performing neck and trunk exercises. Despite his efforts, he still struggles to sit up from a lying position independently.
Dennis Domínguez, Lester's father, affirms that his son remains determined, continuously striving for improvement. "He is very pleased with the care received at the hospital. We spoke with the director, and they provided another refrigerator and enhanced his diet," Dennis revealed. "His leg and arm movements are progressing well, but we need to focus more on his trunk," he added.
Since the violent assault over a year and a half ago, Lester has been unable to walk. His physiotherapists have concentrated on strengthening his chest, abdomen, and limbs, but his recovery remains slow. "Lester has an incomplete C5 spinal cord injury. Where we need to focus most is on his trunk; his hands and legs are doing quite well," Dennis explained, noting that Lester is also underweight.
Lester began a new phase of treatment at Julio Díaz Hospital in July, coinciding with his birthday. A few weeks later, he sent a message to his supporters on CiberCuba, expressing his gratitude and sharing that he felt better, both physically and emotionally. "At Julio Díaz Hospital, I'm making significant progress. I can move my knees, legs, and ankles more freely. I'm gaining strength in my spine, shoulders, arms, and even my hands. I've improved a lot here, and my health is better. I feel great and happy. The care here is excellent. My rehabilitator is highly skilled, and with occupational therapy, ozone treatment, and breathing exercises, I've improved immensely. I can't complain," Lester stated.
