Cuban music legend Omara Portuondo marked her 94th birthday on Tuesday, October 29, in Havana, surrounded by friends and fans who celebrated her remarkable career. In honor of this milestone, Portuondo took to social media to express her gratitude for the well-wishes and to address any rumors regarding her complete withdrawal from the music scene.

Despite reaching the age of 94, the iconic member of the Buena Vista Social Club was adamant that, although she will no longer perform lengthy live concerts due to the natural weariness that accompanies her age, her connection to music remains strong.

"I want to take this opportunity to clarify that I will no longer do long live concerts because I tire, which is natural at my age. But let me be clear, I am not retiring from music. I will continue with my recordings and other activities that my age and health allow," Portuondo shared on her Facebook account.

Passion for Music as a Lifelong Drive

The singer emphasized that, despite the challenges age imposes, her love for music continues to be a driving force. "I've always said that as long as I have the strength and people want to hear me, I will keep singing. Because, as I always say... music is my sky, earth, sea, sun, joy, and reason," she expressed in her heartfelt message.

Portuondo also took the opportunity to thank her family, friends, her doctor, and everyone who cares for her, highlighting that she feels "blessed" to have them by her side.

Living Life on Her Own Terms

With her straightforward and sincere style, Omara Portuondo defended her right to live according to her own choices: "With respect to all those who sincerely appreciate me, everyone decides how they want to live and die," she declared, reinforcing her life philosophy with a dignity that has earned her admiration across generations.

The celebrated artist concluded her message with a special thank you to her friend and colleague Juan De Marcos, who recently dedicated a message of admiration and respect to her.

Meanwhile, Portuondo assures that her voice will continue to resonate in future recordings and projects, as long as her health and energy permit. In this way, Omara Portuondo, a cultural icon of Cuba, continues her legacy in music, making it clear that although she is stepping away from live performances, her love for the art remains as deep and everlasting as ever.
