On Friday, Alejandro Castro Medina, the Cuban Consul General in Spain, hastily ruled out any Cuban casualties among the victims of the recent floods in Valencia. This assertion was made despite the fact that he only confirmed the safety of 300 Cuban emigrants out of a total of 8,000 residing in the affected area.
In a post on X, Castro Medina claimed to have reached out to "300 Cuban residents in the flooded towns of Valencia. We regret no loss of any compatriot." He added, "We convey to them that the homeland proudly observes their solidarity with their Valencian neighbors."
However, this information appears unreliable. Valencia is home to over 2,500 Cubans, with an additional 5,411 residing in the larger Valencian Community, including members of the CiberCuba team. They assert that "no one from the embassy has contacted us."
In these regions, more than 200 people have died due to the floods in the past week, with local authorities suggesting the death toll is much higher. As of the latest report on Thursday, 155 deaths were recorded, but the number increased by nearly 60 as debris was cleared and houses destroyed by the rain and floods were examined.
