Cuban Mother Stages Protest in Baracoa Over Food and Power Shortages

Saturday, November 2, 2024 by James Rodriguez

A Cuban mother took a stand outside the municipal government building in Baracoa, protesting the ongoing shortages of electricity and food. The woman, who has two children, expressed her frustration after visiting the government office twice without receiving any solution to the power outages affecting her since October 20th. "Neither the OBE nor the government provides answers," she shouted from the institution's entrance, as captured in a video shared on Facebook by Francisco Luis Manzanet Ortiz.

During her protest, she demanded, "How long will this abuse and exploitation continue?" A government official emerged from the building in an attempt to soothe her concerns. The region of Baracoa has been grappling with extensive flooding and delayed recovery efforts following Hurricane Oscar, which struck nearly two weeks ago, bringing heavy rains that have exacerbated the situation.

The Struggle Continues in Baracoa

As the rains resumed, residents of this Guantanamo area faced continued power outages, a lack of cooking fuel, and scarce potable water. In an effort to quell the growing discontent over the inadequate response, the local government distributed rationed goods for October. This distribution policy included the free allocation of essential supplies, recorded in the ration book, highlighting the severe resource constraints facing the community.
