In a recent security incident in Cuba, police in Holguín province have apprehended a thief who targeted a group of Cubans returning from San Antonio del Sur, a municipality severely impacted by Hurricane Oscar. The theft occurred on October 28 in the area of Duani 5, within the Cueto municipality, as reported by the official profile linked to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), known as Cazador-Cazado.

The suspect, identified as Yuandi Corrales, hails from Palma Soriano in Santiago de Cuba province. Taking advantage of the night and the travelers' distraction, he allegedly forced open the trunk of their vehicle, making off with a briefcase and a backpack.

The swift resolution of this case was largely due to the cooperation of the residents of Duani 5 and Marcané. By assisting law enforcement, they played a crucial role in the recovery of the stolen items, which were subsequently returned in full to the victims. These individuals were traveling back from one of the areas most devastated by Hurricane Oscar.

Devastation of Hurricane Oscar

Hurricane Oscar hit the Guantánamo region hard on October 20 and 21, causing significant destruction both materially and to the daily lives of its inhabitants. The storm, marked by torrential rains and fierce winds, wreaked havoc across several parts of the province. San Antonio del Sur suffered particularly due to its vulnerable geographical position and inadequate infrastructure.

Numerous communities were left isolated as roads and bridges were damaged, complicating rescue operations and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The community's resilience and willingness to assist played a pivotal role in overcoming the challenges posed by this natural disaster.
