Meivis Mulen Díaz, a 54-year-old protester from the July 11, 2021 demonstrations, has been released after serving a four-year prison sentence in Camagüey. This information was shared by the Cuban Observatory for Human Rights, which highlighted the harsh conditions Mulen Díaz endured during his imprisonment, including systematic cruel treatment, starvation, and lack of medication for his ailments.
Back in 2021, Díaz recounted his arrest on July 11th and subsequent release on July 14th, under a house arrest order that restricted him from leaving his residence. "My home has been constantly surrounded by the regime’s henchmen and informants, who have never ceased their surveillance," he stated. Despite his release, police and State Security agents have continued their unwelcome visits to his home.
He described his life following the July protests as a torment, plagued by relentless harassment from the regime's enforcers. "They keep me under constant pressure, and as a human being, they don't let me live in peace. This is why I fear for my life, and for the safety of my children and family," the dissident expressed.
Other Recent Releases of Political Prisoners
Recently, Pedro Albert Sánchez, a professor, returned home after a ten-day hunger strike. The prison authorities in Cuba had denied him an interview, but he was eventually granted a one-year extra-penal license, allowing him to leave the prison. His release from the 1580 prison, located in San Miguel del Padrón, was hailed by several Cuban activists as a victory in the ongoing struggle for the freedom of political prisoners.
This year also saw the release of Fernando González Vaillant, an activist with the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU). After serving more than two years in prison, he was freed, having lost over 50 pounds (24 kilograms) due to starvation, illness, and the harsh conditions of the detention facility.
