In an unprecedented outcome, Cuba concluded the 2024 Youth Boxing World Championship without securing a single gold medal—a first in the nation's history at these events. Held in Budva, Montenegro, the competition saw the Cuban team fall short of its usual brilliance, bringing home only two silver medals. This modest outcome is being viewed as the most underwhelming for the country in the history of this tournament.

The silver medals were claimed by Yojander Fuentes in the 57 kilograms (kg) category and David Manuel Espinosa in the 67 kg category, the only Cuban boxers to reach the podium. Meanwhile, the other team members—Ángel Sober (48 kg), Yurisniel Abreu (75 kg), Javier Alexander Rawlins (86 kg), Kevin Sánchez (54 kg), Jorge Luis Mayeta (80 kg), and Yoelvis Leyán Tejera (63.5 kg)—were eliminated in earlier rounds, highlighting the decline of Cuban boxing in major international competitions.

A Challenge to Overcome

The Cuban technical delegation pointed to "questionable verdicts," fueling ongoing criticisms of the International Boxing Association. However, the final results underscore the challenge Cuba faces in restoring its once-prestigious standing in youth boxing, as reported by Diario de Cuba.

Despite this setback, Cuba maintains its top position in the historical medal tally of the Youth World Championships, with an impressive total of 79 golds, 23 silvers, and 31 bronzes. Nevertheless, the lack of recent victories highlights the pressing need for Cuba to adapt and strengthen its training programs.

Broader Decline in International Success

This performance adds to a series of disappointing results at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where Cuba managed to secure only one gold medal, thanks to Erislandy Álvarez in the 63.5 kg category. The decline of prominent figures like Arlen López and Julio César La Cruz in Paris further emphasizes the urgent task facing Cuban boxing to retain its international status.
