Tuesday, November 5, 2024 by Charlotte Gomez

A confrontation over a tire repair between a mechanic and a client tragically escalated early Saturday morning in Hialeah. The Cuban national, Michel Montes de Oca, aged 36, sought assistance from a mobile service for his vehicle and was met by Brandon Hurst, a 29-year-old mechanic.

According to Eddie Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Hialeah Police Department, the conflict arose when Montes de Oca inspected the tire and realized it was used, which sparked his anger. "It hadn't been clarified whether the tire would be new or used, and this misunderstanding fueled his frustration to the point where a friend tried unsuccessfully to calm him down," Rodríguez noted.

As tensions heightened, Hurst retreated to his vehicle. Montes de Oca, however, retrieved a machete from his car and charged at the mechanic. Fearing for his safety, Hurst responded by shooting Montes de Oca, resulting in his death at the scene. This unfortunate event took place at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and West 29th Street in Hialeah.

Community Reactions and Legal Outcomes

"I was shocked by what happened. People are increasingly aggressive these days and need to think twice before reacting. It's essential to manage emotions," expressed Otoniel Valdés, a neighbor who witnessed the incident, in an interview with Telemundo 51.

Police records confirmed that Brandon Hurst remained at the scene until authorities arrived. Following a thorough investigation, both the police and the prosecutor's office concluded that Hurst's actions were in self-defense, resulting in no charges being filed against the mechanic.

The family of the deceased Cuban man initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Michel Montes de Oca's funeral expenses. In just a few days, over $26,000 has been collected.
