The Provincial Transport Company in Havana has announced the suspension of ferry services across Havana Bay starting at 10:20 a.m. today. This decision, shared on the company's Facebook page, comes as a result of the adverse weather conditions caused by Tropical Storm Rafael, which poses a direct threat to the western provinces.
The company expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and urged residents to use bus services as an alternative. This is not the first instance of such disruptions; last Thursday, ferry operations were temporarily halted due to "strong winds in Havana Bay," with service resuming the following day.
Earlier this month, the ferry service was also suspended for two days due to weather conditions associated with Hurricane Milton, as it passed near the western region of the country. Over the past two years, ferry services in Havana Bay have experienced frequent interruptions. These have been primarily due to technical breakdowns, maintenance issues, pollution in the bay, and even the risk of collapse at the Regla municipality's dock.
These persistent problems have greatly affected passengers who rely on this mode of transportation to travel between Regla, Casablanca, and Old Havana. The interruptions highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the island's transportation infrastructure, exacerbated by the country's broader systemic issues.
