Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on Wednesday, acknowledging the Democratic loss in the 2024 presidential election. "This is clearly not the outcome we anticipated, given our strong disagreements with the Republican stance on various issues," stated the Obamas, who were staunch supporters of Kamala Harris in her presidential bid, through a statement on their social media platform.

They emphasized, "Living in a democracy means accepting that our vision won't always prevail, and being willing to embrace the peaceful transition of power." The Obamas also praised Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz as exemplary public servants, extending their appreciation to the Democratic campaign team and its numerous volunteers across the nation.

Acknowledging Defeat and Emphasizing Unity

Kamala Harris conceded her defeat to a crowd of supporters at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, pledging to focus on ensuring a smooth transition. "In a nation as vast and diverse as ours, disagreements are inevitable. However, progress demands that we engage with good faith and grace, even with those we deeply oppose. This approach has brought us this far, and it is how we will continue to build a fairer, more equal, and free country," she declared.

Domestic and International Reactions

World leaders have been sending their congratulations to Trump following his decisive victory on Tuesday. Within the United States, Democratic governors have also responded to the election outcome. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a vocal critic of Trump and advocate for reproductive rights, expressed solidarity with vulnerable communities. "This morning, our most vulnerable communities awoke to new uncertainties about their future, fearing their rights may no longer be safeguarded and questioning whether this country stands with them," Pritzker remarked on social media.

He addressed women facing increased threats to health care access, as well as Black, Latino, and Asian communities, LGBTQ friends and their families, immigrants, and first-generation Americans who feel insecure and unwelcome due to Trump's campaign and allies. "Know that Illinois stands with you. You will always be welcomed here," he emphasized.

Chicago's Response to the Election

The Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, also expressed his support for Harris and his commitment to keeping Chicago an open and welcoming city for all. "We will not bend or break when it comes to protecting our city," Johnson stated in a declaration.

He clarified that in Illinois, "we will tirelessly work to ensure Chicago remains true to itself. That our city is a place where we live our values and refuse to yield to the dark forces seeking to reverse our nation's progress." As a Democratic stronghold, Chicago overwhelmingly supported Kamala Harris on election night, though it wasn't enough to secure a Democratic victory.
