The Cuban Electric Union (UNE) has started to gradually restore electricity in various areas of Matanzas as of Thursday, following the synchronization of Energás Varadero with the local microsystem. This action has reactivated several circuits in the main city, as well as in Cárdenas and Colón, according to a post on social media platform Facebook.
Currently, the region of Matanzas has access to 10 MW of electrical power, with additional circuits being prepared for activation as soon as the generation capacity allows, as posted by Pedro Rizo Martínez. Kenny Cruz, the technical director of the Provincial Electric Company, reported no significant damage to the network, and the inspection and evaluation of lines are ongoing to ensure safe supply.
Expansion of Power Coverage in Central Cuba
As the two microsystems in the island's center strengthen, energy coverage is expected to extend to more areas in the central region, encompassing provinces from Matanzas to Sancti Spíritus. This afternoon, the synchronization of the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant is anticipated, which would enable energy to reach Felton and resume operations there.
Challenges in Western Provinces
The situation remains challenging for Artemisa, Mayabeque, and Havana, as discussed by leader Miguel Díaz-Canel on social media platform X. The initial step involved assessing the damage caused by Hurricane Rafael, which notably destroyed several high-voltage towers along the Havana-Artemisa highway. These provinces will remain without power until new microsystems are developed. The Ministry of Energy and Mines has already indicated that the rehabilitation in these areas will be "a slow process."
This comes despite the government's claims that electrical workers from central and eastern provinces had traveled to Havana to assist in recovery efforts following Hurricane Rafael's impact.
