A significant accident on Wednesday in Maisí, Guantánamo resulted in four individuals getting injured, with one in critical condition, according to local sources. The incident took place near the area of La Máquina, which is located in the easternmost part of Cuba. The injured were promptly taken to the Octavio de la Concepción and de la Pedraja General Teaching Hospital in Baracoa, as reported by the Primada Visión television station.

Among those hospitalized due to their injuries is Yoenni Rusell Columbié, 40, who suffered multiple traumas and is in critical condition, requiring mechanical ventilation. Others include Yurina Matos Matos, 42, from San Ramón de Vertiente, who experienced multiple contusions; Vilmari Rivera Columbié, 40, also with multiple contusions; and Wilmer Vladimir Noa Rodríguez, 52, a resident of Puriales de Sabana in Maisí, who sustained minor injuries to his upper limbs. These details were provided by Dr. Yuri Alexei Hernández, the director of the Baracoa hospital.

In an update on Thursday afternoon, Primada Visión stated that three of the injured had been discharged and are now recovering at home. However, Rusell Columbié remains hospitalized, classified as "critically stable." A cranial CT scan conducted on Thursday yielded negative results, and he remains on ventilation support.

The Baracoa telecenter reports did not include specifics regarding the circumstances of the accident, such as the time of occurrence or the vehicles involved.

Accident Trends in Cuba

Official statistics from the first half of this year indicate a 13% reduction in traffic accidents (543 fewer incidents) compared to the first six months of 2023. Despite this reported decrease, social media frequently highlights numerous accidents on Cuba's roads, many of which result in fatalities, injuries, and significant material damage.
