A tragic boating accident in Key West resulted in one death and multiple serious injuries on Thursday afternoon, as reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The incident took place around 4:00 p.m. in North Key West Harbor when a 39-foot Deep Impact yacht, carrying eight people, collided with a sandbar and capsized, throwing five passengers into the air, according to Telemundo 51.
The injured were assisted and transported to Conch Harbor Marina on Caroline Street, where several nearby vessels that witnessed the crash or arrived shortly after helped carry them until emergency services arrived. Witnesses on the scene provided first aid, including CPR to some of the injured. One of the victims, a woman, suffered a severe leg fracture, as reported in emergency call logs.
Cody Alhorn, the dock captain's assistant, recounted to the Miami Herald that a boat transported the injured woman to shore while another vessel carried more of the injured. "We were at the marina when it happened and called 911. They weren't scheduled to come here," Alhorn explained.
Ongoing Investigation by Authorities
The FWC has launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident. Currently, the identities and ages of those involved in the incident have not been disclosed.
