In response to recent seismic activity in eastern Cuba, local authorities in Santiago de Cuba have advised residents of the city's high-rise buildings to remain in open areas, which are deemed safer during such events. This recommendation applies specifically to the 11 tall buildings in the area, which range from eight to 18 floors.
Beatriz Johnson, the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Santiago de Cuba, shared with national television that following the earthquakes, provincial leaders visited these buildings to emphasize the importance of staying in open spaces. Johnson highlighted the necessity for orderly and disciplined evacuation to prevent accidents.
"Descending in panic during such an event poses risks, like tripping or falling. It's crucial to evacuate calmly and gather in lower areas. We have prior experience with these phenomena and have identified the nearby school complex, the July 26 City School, as a safe assembly point, especially for those from the 18-story buildings," Johnson explained.
Throughout the afternoon, assessments of the damage will continue, and the population will be kept informed about necessary measures. Johnson stressed the importance of taking precautions, such as turning off gas valves and unplugging electrical appliances, while urging residents to stay informed through official channels to avoid spreading panic.
